The Two-Week Electric Car
This was an extremely fast project done almost entirely by students with almost no resources. While at first glance, it may look inadequate as a car, consider the following: In the beginning of April, a group of students began working on this car. The deadline was the second Saturday of April Vacation, two school weeks away. They worked mostly after school, from 2pm to 3:30 Most days, there were two to five students. Mr. Connors and Mrs. Carlomagno supervised, and helped gather supplies. No student had any experience making a car before. Most students had little experience working with the tools we used. All of the decisions were made by the students. All of the tools were operated by Read More / Leia mais
Irish History class celebrates ancient game
A thousand years ago, a boy named Setanta had magical powers as a hurler. Though he was only eight, he could play against 100 men and win and one day when he was playing a game against 128 grown men hurlers he was defeating them all. While this remarkable thing was happening, the Ard Ri (high king) walked by and saw this amazing skill. He talked with the young Setanta and realized that he was a child unlike any other and so he invited him to join his council meeting that evening and then he went on his way. Sadly he forgot that he had invited Setanta and when it came time for the meeting he rolled up a big stone at the entrance of his castle to keep everyone out and he placed his huge Read More / Leia mais

Highlights from the One-World Trip to NYC
Field Trip to ESPN Studios
This past Friday we took a field trip to the ESPN Campus in Bristol, CT. The pictures will speak to this, but it was truly an amazing experience for our kids (and chaperones). This trip wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of Joe Schroeder. His networking with the Russillo family, in particular former MVRHS grad Ryen Rusillo, made the trip possible. ESPN doesn't normally offer school tours, but with the right connections we were given the Friends and Family Tour, which included time in Ryen and Scott Van Pelt's radio studio, the chance to see the old Baseball Tonight studio, and Herm Edwards, Linda Cohn, Adam Schefter, Todd McShay, and Mel Kiper sightings throughout our Read More / Leia mais
March Engineering Challenge Results
Each month, students have an opportunity to compete in a monthly engineering meet as part of our Engineering Challenge Program. At the meet, they are issued a design challenge, and they work in teams of 2-3 to meet that challenge. After 45 minutes, the designs are evaluated, and the meet winners are determined. All members of winning teams accumulate points over the season and are thus eligible to become grand winners of the Challenge. The March Challenge was to create a marker that could draw the longest line using 1 mL of ink. Each group was given ink, a variety of absorbent materials like cotton, felt, sponge, and filter paper, as well as some glass, plastic and rubber tubing Read More / Leia mais

Scenes from the 4th Annual Brazilian American Friendship Lunch
The lunch which is an annual event is intended to build understanding and create opportunities for meaningful dialog between our student communities. It is based on a simple concept that each Brazilian-American student invites a student or a teacher from the larger culture to be their guest. The meal is a traditional Brazilian lunch and the organizing committee decorate the dining room, send out invitations and provide music. It has always been a really meaningful and important day for the students who organize it, and we were very excited to be presenting this for the fourth time. -Elaine Weintraub Photos by Gabby da Silva. Hour of Code – All Week!
CS Ed Week (Computer Science Ed Week) has created Hour of Code as an initiative to introduce people to the ideas behind programming and code. What they are encouraging is that people try out coding for an hour during this week to see what it is like to do, and get a bit of experience with programming on some level. See more about what we're doing here at MVRHS. Read More / Leia mais
