This year, the MVironment Club wanted to focus on how to reduce energy use and waste. We explored the value of locally grown food in terms of conserving energy resources, and we learned about the disadvantages of plastic in our environment. First, the group held an art competition to discourage the use of single-use plastic bottles. The group next turned to learning about hydroponic growing systems. We held an elementary school workshop and a middle school workshop to build hydroponic systems. At four local elementary schools, the group held a one-hour session after school to build small passive hydroponic systems and energy-efficient LED grow lamps that the group had designed and tested Read More / Leia mais

Irish History class remembers shipwreck off Chappaquiddick
On May 28th, during this time of memorializing those who went before us, the Irish History class boarded the tiny Chappy school bus and traveled to the scene where in 1851, 256 Irish people fleeing from the Famine in Ireland were shipwrecked. The class had researched the name of the boat: The British Queen, and had obtained its passenger list. We know from the captain's report that five people died on the voyage from Ireland and that a baby was born. Contemporary reports from the rescuers speak of the Irish being packed in steerage in appalling conditions and the diary of Jeremiah Pease tells that "four Irish froze to death." The students read all of the 256 names of the passengers, threw Read More / Leia mais

An Gorta Mór: The Irish Famine and Persistence of Hunger Today
By Katrina Heilbroner Editors note: The paper below was recently submitted to Elaine Weintraub's Irish History class. The Irish Famine was a period during which resentment, desperation, and misery spread throughout Ireland, ultimately changing the history of the world. Although this time began with the Blight affecting the potato crop, the famine was truly caused by corruption within the British government. In 1845, a disease commonly known as the Blight infected all of the potato crops in Ireland. The scientific name of the Blight was Phytophthora infestans. Because potatoes were the primary food and farming source for the Irish, this disease created a massive loss of income as Read More / Leia mais
