Virtually onboard the R/V Falkor
MVRHS Maritime Sciences teacher Brock Callen along with his son, Brock Callen, Jr. (who is an ambassador for 11th Hour Racing, an organization dedicated to ocean sustainability) have been sharing their experience through Google Hangouts with students while onboard R/V Falkor, an oceanographic research vessel owned by Schmidt Ocean Institute, as it went from Guam to Honolulu from December 27th to January 17th. This is an exciting and unique opportunity not only for them, but MVRHS students as well. Falkor’s misson is to map previously unknown undersea topography, including seamounts around Johnston Atoll using multibeam mapping tool and sonar. MVironment Club’s phragmite project
Hi, everyone! I am excited to share with you that the MVironment Club's current project has been selected as one of five state finalists in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. The competition asks student groups to address the challenge, "Show how STEAM can be applied to help your local community." Our project involves working with waste phragmite to make biomass pellets that can be burned in a pellet stove. Emma Green-Beach from the Shellfish group currently has a grant to study the removal of phragmite from local ponds as a method of reducing nitrogen levels in the ponds.
