Announcements
- Graduation: Seniors of MVRHS graduation on Sunday, June 10th at 1:30 in the Tabernacle.
- Open Campus Privilege: The school is considering letting next year’s seniors “in good standing” schedule one “free” period. If their free block is either first or last period, they may come in late and/or leave early by checking with attendance. If a senior’s free block falls in the middle of the day, students may not drive off campus, but will be allowed to walk to surrounding areas such as the YMCA, skatepark, or other surrounding areas. They will not be allowed to wander the halls or interrupt classes. If seniors choose to stay in the building, they may go to the cafeteria.
Students will remain in good standing as long as they:- Serve consequences when assigned and do not have any missed consequences on record;
- Are not on social probation as a result of suspension;
- Have not cut class or school on the school day of an event (if the activity/event is on a
weekend, the school day immediately prior to the event counts); - Are not a safety concern to the community; and
- Demonstrate a willingness and ability to comply with the reasonable requests of adults and
be redirected in the moment.- NEXT YEAR’S SENIORS WILL GET THIS OPPORTUNITY JUNE 11th – 15th!
- Lockdown Video and Drill (dates changed): On Monday June 4th , students will watch a video on “Run. Hide. Fight.” to help educate them on what do during a real life lockdown. On June 5th students will partake in a lockdown drill.
- Ticks: From the MVRHS School Nurse: The use of repellents can be a highly effective way to prevent tick bites and reduce the risk of getting any number of tick-borne diseases including Lyme, Babesiosis, Anaplasmosis, Relapsing Fever and Powassan Virus. See Nurse Leonard for more information!
- Car Wash to Benefit Class of 2021: 9am to 12pm on Saturday, June 9th at MVRHS (outside the PAC)! $10 with a pre-bought ticket, $15 day of! Bake sale offered as well!
- Peer Family Planning: At MVRHS we recognize and respect the power of peer to peer relationships and are excited to announce a new venture partnered with Martha’s Vineyard Family Planning. On behalf of Family Planning, we are seeking 12 students, Freshman and Sophomores, to complete a training with Family Planning on reproductive education and awareness. They will then have the opportunity to complete community service options at the YMCA, and be a peer-to-peer mentor to other MVRHS students.
- Family Planning staff will train the nominated students by using the curricular researched program ‘Get Real’. Training will take place for 12 sessions during Flex next year.
- If you are interested, please email Amy at alilavois@mvrhs.org , or Ms. Perrotta at kperrotta@mvrhs.org, by Wednesday, June 6th. Please include a contact # in your email.
- Project Green School & Coral Restoration Foundation Ocean Ambassador Intern Program : This summer Project Vine is piloting a Summer Leadership Institute in Key Largo and, as a National Green Schools Society Chapter, would love to invite you to participate in this first annual program. With the Coral Restoration Foundation in the Keys, our goal is to develop ecological stewardship and global leadership. We will be focusing on creating effective programs and communicating clear messages while experiencing one of the world’s most amazing ecosystems.
- When: July 27-29 (Fri, Sat, Sun)
- 3 day, 2 night accommodations at Marine Lab (Key Largo)
- Cost: $375 per student. This price is all inclusive (meals, lodging, snorkel gear, boat charters
for field trips, labs, and evening activities) for 3 days and 2 nights, which is way way less than the cost of hotel rooms and food down here in Key Largo. To apply for this opportunity email your details to nicole.canty@projectgreenschools.org

Vineyarder of the Week
This week we interviewed Rose Engler, Class of 2018 Valedictorian
What college are you going to and what for?
I’m going to Brown University! I was admitted to Brown’s Program in Liberal Medical Education, an 8 year BA/MD program. It basically means that I was admitted to Brown University for undergrad as well as medical school! I absolutely love the program because it grants me so much freedom in my education as well as in my personal life. Instead of shaping my undergraduate experience to fit into a medical school application, I am completely free to learn and do what I wish. It also grants me the ability to study abroad, which is not a possibility for traditional pre-med students, and forego the MCATS. I can spend my time honing my passions and really discovering myself as a person. I think it’s literally perfect for me!
What are you doing over the summer?
I feel like I have been very busy for the past few summers doing crazy things, so this summer I want to spend more time relaxing. I plan to spend most of my time laying out on the beach and hanging out with friends! I might dabble in some work here and there as well.
What activities were you involved in at the school?
I was involved in many activities because I have a LARGE array of passions and interests. I also view high school as a time that students need to explore and try new things in an attempt to find themselves. I was the Student Council president, National Honors Society President, Interact Club President and Editor-in-Chief of the High School View. I was also a triple varsity athlete and captain of the soccer, basketball, and track teams.
What was the hardest time period in your high school career?
April of senior year was a difficult month. I had so many fantastic college choices, and I found it difficult to decide between them (decisions came out in late March and were due May 1st). They literally give you one month to decide the trajectory of the rest of your life!
Did you think it was hard to have sports and school work at the same time?
Not at all! I think that high school is all about learning time management. I used to look forward to off-island games and meets, as I would see them as a great group of hours to do homework or study for a test. I typically don’t start my homework until around 10 pm, so to be done with everything by the 8:30 boat seemed like a slamming deal to me!
What is something that you wish you could have done differently in your high school time?
Nothing! I absolutely loved every moment of my high school career. I had amazing friends and did some amazing things. I can not be more grateful for my experience growing up here!
If there was one tip that your underclassman self could have known, what would it be?
1. Say YES! Say yes, say yes, say yes! Say yes to every opportunity whether you think you may like it or not. I can not even name the number of incredible opportunities I have been lucky enough to participate in because I simply said yes or the number of unlikely passions I have found through weird and random activities.
02. Education is the single thing that nobody can take away from you. Value it. It is yours.
3. When you enter high school your future is limitless, everyday following that you are defining your future. Work for what you want and who you want to become; in time that is who you will be.
Do you ever see yourself coming back to the island after college?
I can see myself spending a week here every now and then, but I don’t think I am going to live here. I envision myself moving from country to country every few years. I want to explore our earth and its various cultures and climates. I feel like there is just so much out there. I have explored every inch of this little island over the past 8 years so I’m excited for something different and new.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I have an extremely complicated personal life that has forced me to really fight for my reputation and my success.

Mackenzie’s 400 hurdle time of 63.47 will have her seeded 2nd next week at All States, but more importantly this time qualifies her for the emerging elite class at The US High School Outdoor National Championships to be held down in North Carolina in June! She is the first female MVRHS track athlete to ever reach the astronomically high standard to qualify for this prestigious meet.
The Girls Tennis Team who were unbeaten in the regular season!
