Open Campus Privilege THIS WEEK FOR RISING SENIORS!!!: The school is considering letting next year’s seniors “in good standing” schedule one “free” period. If their free block is either first or last period, they may come in late and/or leave early by checking with attendance. If a senior’s free block falls in the middle of the day, students may not drive off campus, but will be allowed to walk to surrounding areas such as the YMCA, skatepark, or other surrounding areas. They will not be allowed to wander the halls or interrupt classes. If seniors choose to stay in the building, they may go to the cafeteria.
- Students will remain in good standing as long as they:
- Serve consequences when assigned and do not have any missed consequences on record;
- Are not on social probation as a result of suspension;
- Have not cut class or school on the school day of an event (if the activity/event is on a weekend, the school day immediately prior to the event counts);
- Are not a safety concern to the community; and
- Demonstrate a willingness and ability to comply with the reasonable requests of adults and be redirected in the moment.

- NO TIME FOR LYME: Join MVRHS students, Owen Engler, and Sam Cranston, as they share their experience collaborating with MIT scientists on the Mice Against Ticks project. This community-driven project aims to alter white-footed mice to be resistant to the bacteria that causes Lyme. Resistant mice will reduce the number of infected ticks and protect the community from new cases of Lyme Disease. In addition to helping inform the community about this exciting project, the students will also discuss their role setting up the new MVRHS tick testing lab that is being used to test island ticks for the Lyme bacteria.

- Musical Meeting: for all students interested in the musical next year, there will be an informational meeting. We will announce our selection for next years production, discuss changes to the rehearsal schedule, audition dates, and overall concept of the show.

Vineyarder of the Week
This week we interviewed Ms. Cotton, Department Chair of Project Vine.
What is your role here in the high school?
I am the Department Chair for Project Vine and a science teacher.
What courses do you teach?
I teach C1 Physics, Project Vine Chemistry, Project Vine Biology and Project Vine Freshman Earth Science. Next year I will be teaching mainstream Earth Science, Chemistry, Physics and Project Vine Biology
Where did you go to school and what did you study?
I went to Middlebury College and studied Geology with a minor in elementary education. I got a masters in Earth Science education at City College in New York City.
What brought you to the island?
I grew up coming here in the summer. My parents have a house in Aquinnah. My now husband and I came for the summer one year when we were teaching in NYC and ended up staying.
How did you get involved in Project Vine?
I was teaching 5th and 6th grade math and science at the Charter School and saw that they were starting a new Alternative Program at the high school and looking for a science teacher, so I was hired when the program started.
What makes Project Vine different from regular classes at MVRHS?
Our classes are all 12 students or less. We have a strong community across multiple grades. With small classes we work on helping students develop a strong voice so they can be advocates for their own education. We teach the same content as the other classes, but also focus on the skills of “doing school” and skills that will go beyond the classroom into the community.
What fundraisers has Project Vine done? Have they been successful?
We have done the Cornhole Tournament the last two years and it has been fun and successful.
Is Project Vine here to stay at the High School?
MVRHS has supported Alternative Education at the high school for a long time in many different forms. Project Vine has been very successful and I imagine will be here for a long time. We have a lot of enthusiastic students and parents.
What is one thing that you tell kids if they are hesitant about joining Project Vine?
I ask them lots of questions because its a voluntary program so students have to come to it on their own. I ask them what do what do they want from their education at MVRHS? Are they happy and successful in what they are doing? Do they feel they are part of a supportive community? If no, then I will tell them they may want to shadow in the program and see if it is a good fit.
What is one thing that most people didn’t know about you?
I am learning how to train my dog, Elsa, a Rottweiler, in competitive obedience although people probably know that since I talk about it all the time!
