Announcements

• NO SCHOOL MONDAY! Long weekend – Happy Memorial Day on Monday 5/28.
• Change in Schedule: Due to the senior exams this week, flex block will follow 2nd period at 10:20, ending at 11:00am. Tuesday will be Mentor Tuesday and we will sign up for flex through June 8th.
• Open Campus Privilege: The school is considering letting next year’s seniors “in good standing” schedule one “free” period. If their free block is either first or last period, they may come in late and/or leave early by checking with Inez. If a senior’s free block falls in the middle of the day, students may not drive off campus, but will be allowed to walk to surrounding areas such as the YMCA, skatepark, or other surrounding areas. They will not be allowed to wander the halls or interrupt classes. If seniors choose to stay in the building, they may go to the cafeteria. Students will remain in good standing as long as they:
  • Serve consequences when assigned and do not have any missed consequences on record;
  • Are not on social probation as a result of suspension;
  • Have not cut class or school on the school day of an event (if the activity/event is on a weekend, the school day immediately prior to the event counts);
  • Are not a safety concern to the community; and
  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to comply with the reasonable requests of adults and be redirected in the moment.
  • NEXT YEAR’S SENIORS WILL GET THIS OPPORTUNITY IN JUNE!
• Lockdown Video and Drill (dates changed): On Monday June 4th, students will watch a video on “Run. Hide. Fight.” to help educate them on what do during a real life lockdown. On June 5th students will partake in a lockdown drill.

• Island Grown Initiative: Wants people of all ages to help with Summer lunch program, which will serve free, delicious and healthy lunches from July 9th-August 17th. We are looking for volunteers to help make and package lunches in the high school kitchen from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and serve lunches from 11:15 to 12:15. Volunteers can sign up for daily, weekly, or one-time shifts.
  • More than 40% of island students receive free or reduced price breakfast and lunch at school. Many adults and elders in our community also benefit from these services.
  • This year, we will serve lunches at the Boys and Girls Club in Edgartown, the English Language Learner Summer Program at the Tisbury School, the Oak Bluffs Library, West Tisbury Library, and the MV Family Center in Vineyard Haven.

• Teacher’s Aide: The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, an inclusive, service minded Christian church is looking for teachers assistants. Sunday School takes place during the worship service. The teacher’s aide will assist the lead teacher in setup, presenting the lesson, crafts, playground time, and toddler care on an as-needed basis. Sundays, 9:45-11:30. Salary-$40/wk.

Vineyarder of the Week

This week we interviewed Mr. Jeremy Light, a new history teacher here at the high school and the coordinator for AP Exams!

What is your role at MVRHS?
I am a World History teacher and an AP coordinator. Next year I am creating a Sports and Society elective and might possibly teach US History 2.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up on the West Coast of Florida.

Where did you go to college and what did you study?
I attended the University of Central Florida and studied social science education.

Why did you move here from Florida?
I moved to Massachusetts so that my wife could be closer to her family and friends, because she grew up in Lexington, and so that my children could have a better education.

How did you become coordinator of AP testing?
I had some experience from back in Florida and after Mr. Burgoyne left MVRHS, the school needed someone to take over and fill the position.

What do you do in your free time?
I play golf and coach my kid’s little league baseball team.

Are you involved in any other school activities?
I was part of the SWEAR training this year and my hope is to get involved in more school sports next year.

What is one thing that people don’t know about you?
I’m an only child.

Spring Sports Updates

The MVRHS Boys tennis team defeated Dennis-Yarmouth 5-0 in Yarmouth on Wednesday 5/23/18 in a non-league match. The Vineyard is now 9-2 on the year and 4-0 in league play. Their next match is at home on Monday May 28 against Barnstable. Playing first singles the Vineyard’s Max Potter defeated Tucker Richard, 6-0 ,6-0. His teammate Chris Ferry beat D-Y’s Tom Canning, 6-0, 6-0 in second singles and Eric Reubens was victorious over D-Y’s Julian Savini, 6-1, 6-1 in third singles. Playing first doubles for the Vineyard Spencer Pogue and Owen Favreau took out Joseph Malone and Harsh Patel, 6-1, 6-1. And the second Islander doubles team of co-captians David Krauthamer and Garrett Zeilinger beat Dennis Liu and Hannel Naquines, 6-0, 6-2

The spirited Vineyard substitutes Harold Lawry V and Wyatt Belisle won their singles exhibition matches 6-0, 6-4 respectively. In a show of unbridled joy Mr. Lawry left his favorite jacket behind. Arrangements are in the works to secure its return.

Center for African Studies:
In these sessions, we are looking in depth at Africa, and all its historical, political, geographical, religious, and cultural elements. Each session will be a study of a slice of life in an African nation, how people live, how people work, and how people thrive in the varied regions of one of the great continents of the world. Travel Seminar:
In looking at the concept of travel, two questions always arise: Are we going to a location? or Are we simply trying to leave one? We will have teachers, students, and guests present on their travels, and share on their experiences traveling, studying and volunteering abroad, and more importantly, how those experiences impacted their lives. The Harvard Forest Project
The Harvard Forest Project hopes to collect data from around the State of Massachusetts about forests. In the State Forest we have begun exploring how forests change over time, including the response of forests to different environments and land use; and how forest composition and growth respond to future natural and human-caused disturbances. This year we identified 2 sites to compare forest health over time in similar areas- one with no-controlled burn and one in a controlled burn area. We are working with the Vineyard Conservation Society and Chris Bruno to collect ongoing data on these sites. During flex we will be discussing options for interest in this project as community service, a club activity or science project data collection. Nothing else is required except a desire to immerse yourself in a book of your choosing. If you haven’t found such a book, yet, we are here to help you find one.
