Vineyarder of the Week
This week we interviewed Owen Engler, MVRHS Junior and member of the DECA club.
What is DECA?
DECA is an internationally recognized organization that organizes business competitions involving different districts and chapters around the state and country. It was originally created to give kids training and opportunity in the business industry and to provide students with real life conversations and interviews with people in the world of business.
How many students participate in DECA?
42 students this year and we hope to grow even larger next year.
Why did you decide to join DECA?
I decided to join DECA for two reasons. First, they really needed someone in a leadership position and I wanted to fill that position (I am president of the school’s DECA chapter), and secondly, we had the chance to grow the club this year and I was on board with helping to redefine and restructure the program.
Who went to finals or states? And what for?
Owen Engler and Andres Garcia for “Entrepreneurship- Team Decision Making;” Henry Hitchings for “Entrepreneurship- Series;” and Louise McDonald and Cassie Cassie didn’t attend states, but qualified for “Fashion and Apparels Marketing.” During the district competition many kids won medals and placed in many categories, which is huge.
What is the structure of the conference? Debates? Competitions?
It starts off with districts. We go to the regional conference first, which is held on Cape Cod. The top 5 from every category move on to States. Each district has the chosen representative for their district and they compete. From there, the top 5 again go to the International competition in Atlanta, Georgia. Each state has a representative who competes for that state.
Do you have any highlights from DECA this year you would like to share?
When we won at regionals, we got a trophy and accepted it on the stage. When everyone is clapping for you, it is a surreal experience. You can just be a high school kid, we even had some freshmen up there, and everyone is clapping for you. It’s not that hard, a little bit of studying for sure- but once you understand the flow of things, it gets easier and will benefit you in any business job in the future.
When is the next conference or competition going to be?
The next regional competition is next January, which gives us time to train and get ready, but there are many other events that we will be attending and fundraising for. For example, DECA is going to a Red Sox game in May where we will learn more about marketing and advertising. By the end of summer, we are hoping to revamp the program and hopefully go to competitions before regionals in January, 2019.
Do you want to continue something like this in college?
Yes, I hope to pursue a business major in college, considering that business is such an important part of my life and my high school career. We have gone really far in DECA this year. This has been my first year in DECA and I (along with 8 other students) qualified for states after competing in the district competition! Normally, clubs involved with DECA don’t have that many kids who qualify for states their first year. We have some promising talent who will hopefully participate again next year.
