Vineyarder(s) of the Week
Each week we will introduce a student or staff member to our entire school community!
This Week: Susanna Becchio, Senior at MVRHS, Best Buddies Club Student Leader
How long have you been active with Best Buddies?
This is my third year.
Does Best Buddies have a mission?
The mission of Best Buddies is inclusion. We have special education students who are not in our mainstream classes and this Club offers the chance for building relationships with everyone in the school and not just those in our classrooms.
What is your favorite part of Best Buddies?
I love being able to see friendships develop and see that two kids can come together when they didn’t know they had anything in common. I love seeing my buddies open up and feel comfortable around others. Students walking down the hallway are more comfortable saying hello or stopping to have a little chat once they have participated.
What are some activities you do as a Club?
This semester we have had an arts and crafts event, a gathering where we created turkeys for Thanksgiving, a dance party in the gym, and recently we had a cookie decorating party. We then distributed the cookies all around the school and had a lot of fun all together.
Is there anything else you would like to add for people who may be interested in joining the club?
As of now, the Club is only at the High School. I would really like to see it grow and be open the community at large and the elementary schools. Next semester I am working on opening it up the to middle school kids and am trying to figure out a time where the middle school students can hang out with high school students. I think with more involvement in the Club, and a better understanding of what it is in the community, our mission (inclusion) will continue to spread.
Who will be taking over the club when you leave?
I’m not quite sure yet, but they have to go through a process and I believe they need to speak to our state representative. I am working with MVRHS teacher, Sally Callahan to try to find next year’s student leader!
Do you think you will continue with something similar in college?
Yes. Best Buddies is an international club and many colleges actually participate in Best Buddies. This was one thing I looked for when applying to college this year.
Do you know where you are going to college yet?
I applied to a bunch of places, but I’m not quite sure yet where I will go.
