Dear MVRHS Community,
I hope everyone had a safe and restful break.
Perhaps you have heard lately that the high school is looking to implement “Away for the Day” with regard to phones next year. This is an extension of our current rule which states that students hand phones in to teachers at the start of classes and flex time. “Away for the Day” would bring the high school expectations in alignment with the current expectations of the island middle schools–that phones are away for the entire day.
The “why” is incredibly important here. It is not simply an academic endeavor. Yes, phones are distractions in class, and it has been an incredible challenge to ensure that all 90 teachers collect phones at the start of each block of class time. And yes, years of research show a correlation between teen use of phones in schools and a decline in academic outcomes and engagement worldwide. However, the team that looked into “Away for the day” at MVRHS has spent more time discussing the need to reclaim high school as a social experience. We strongly believe — and research supports — that teens are happier when they are interacting with one another off screen. We yearn for loud hallways and boisterous lunch rooms again. We want students to continue to discuss classroom topics even after the bell rings. These moments are critical to the brain development that happens in childhood and adolescence. However useful phones are, access to them throughout the school day impacts healthy social and academic development. And healthy academic and social development is the core mission of schools.
While it is true that many students do not abuse phones throughout the day, our school culture is shaped by the choices and habits of all. A collective action to put phones away during the school day will minimize the destructive impact of social media, location tracking, fear of what others may be posting, and the distraction of another student’s non-academic use of technology in class.
Years ago, we had smoking sections in school–some of you may actually remember this time. During lunch and free periods, students could smoke cigarettes on school grounds. That changed when the surgeon general released studies and statements highlighting the dangers of smoking. At this time, during lunch and between classes, students are allowed to use their phones. Last May, the surgeon general issued an advisory about the negative effects of social media on mental health. “Away for the day” is a similar school-based regulation in response to a surgeon general’s warning about the harm of social media — isolation, anxiety, declining mental health, and addiction — that is readily accessible through smartphones. Schools have the opportunity — and I would argue the responsibility — to establish a set of norms that promote health and restrict unhealthy behavior in the building where students spend much of their day in pursuit of learning and social connection.

In each of these contexts, we have shared our reasons for pursuing this initiative, and gathered concerns and questions to inform our smartphone plan moving forward. We will continue to explore ways to implement this plan in a supportive and transparent way, and we plan to measure our success by continuing our round table discussions next year, and reviewing SELIS survey data.

Passover
As we acknowledge the commencement of Passover on the evening of April 22nd, it’s an opportunity to recognize and honor the traditions observed by members of our community. Lasting for eight days until April 30th, Passover holds immense significance in Jewish culture, commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. During this period, families often engage in rituals such as the Seder meal, a symbolic feast that recounts the story of Exodus and emphasizes themes of freedom and redemption. Additionally, the removal of leavened products from households and the consumption of unleavened bread, known as matzah, symbolize the haste with which the Israelites fled Egypt.
Acknowledging the significance of this time, accommodating dietary restrictions, and considering scheduling considerations can greatly contribute to making this period more comfortable for observant members and foster a sense of inclusivity within our community. By embracing and respecting the diverse traditions celebrated within our school, we strengthen our bonds and foster an environment of mutual respect and appreciation.
PowerSchool Visibility
Quarter 3 grades will be released at noon on Wednesday, April 24th and students and parents/guardians will be able to access grades in PowerSchool.

A huge shout out to Abigail Chandler, Erin Slossberg, Justine DeOliveira, Ellen Muir and Dani Charbonneau who volunteered their time to travel with students. Each of these staff members understands the transformative potential of travel, and stepped away from their own busy lives to give students this opportunity.
MVRHS Students Perform All-State Music Festival
Congratulations to junior Aiden Weiland, senior Samuel Hines, and sophomore Zyler Flanders who were selected to sing in the 70th annual Massachusetts All-State Music Festival in Boston’s historic Symphony Hall last month! MVRHS Chess Club Takes on Falmouth Academy
On Wednesday, April 11th, six members of the MVRHS Chess Club (Kestutis Biskis, Shevaun Brown, Owen Kiernan, Odin Robinson, Billie Vanderhoop Shephard, and Gabriel Walters) boarded the Steamship Ferry to take on six students from Falmouth Academy. The 2nd annual chess event between our two schools began at Leeside Restaurant in Woods Hole. After playing one game at the restaurant, everyone boarded the ferry heading back to Martha’s Vineyard and continued playing matches against multiple opponents while on the ferry. No official score was kept. All students experienced both success and defeat. More photos from the event here.

Talvez você tenha ouvido que a escola está pensando em implementar o “Away for the Day” em relação aos telefones celulares no próximo ano escolar. Essa é uma extensão da nossa regra atual, que determina que os alunos entreguem os telefones aos professores no início das aulas e no horário do flex. O “Away for the Day” alinha com as expectativas atuais das outras escolas da ilha também – de que os telefones fiquem longe durante o dia escolar.
O “porquê” é extremamente importante aqui. Não se trata apenas de um esforço acadêmico. Sim, os telefones são uma distração em sala de aula, e tem sido um desafio incrível garantir que todos os 90 professores recolham os telefones no início de cada bloco da aula. E sim, anos de pesquisa mostram uma correlação entre o uso de telefones por adolescentes nas escolas e um declínio nos resultados acadêmicos e no envolvimento em todo o mundo. No entanto, a equipe que analisou o “Away for the day” na MVRHS passou mais tempo discutindo a necessidade de recuperar o ensino médio como uma experiência social. Acreditamos firmemente – e as pesquisas confirmam – que os adolescentes são mais felizes quando interagem uns com os outros fora da tela. Ansiamos por corredores barulhentos e refeitórios agitados novamente. Queremos que os alunos continuem a discutir os tópicos da sala de aula mesmo depois que o sino tocar. Por mais úteis que sejam os telefones, o acesso a eles durante todo o dia escolar afeta o desenvolvimento social e acadêmico saudável. Embora seja verdade que muitos alunos não abusam dos telefones durante o dia, nossa cultura escolar é moldada pelas escolhas e hábitos de todos. Uma ação coletiva para guardar os telefones durante o dia letivo minimizará o impacto destrutivo da mídia social, o rastreamento de localização, o medo do que os outros possam estar publicando e a distração do uso não acadêmico da tecnologia por outro aluno em sala de aula.
Anos atrás, tínhamos seções para fumantes na escola – alguns de vocês talvez se lembrem dessa época. Durante o almoço e os períodos livres, os alunos podiam fumar cigarros nas dependências da escola. Isso mudou quando o cirurgião geral divulgou estudos e declarações destacando os perigos do fumo. Nesse momento, durante o almoço e entre as aulas, os alunos podem usar seus telefones. Em maio passado, o cirurgião geral emitiu um alerta sobre os efeitos negativos da mídia social na saúde mental. “Away for the day” é uma regulamentação semelhante baseada na escola em resposta a um alerta do cirurgião geral sobre os danos da mídia social – isolamento, ansiedade, declínio da saúde mental e dependência – que é facilmente acessível por meio de smartphones. As escolas têm a oportunidade – e eu diria que têm a responsabilidade – de estabelecer um conjunto de normas que promovam a saúde e restrinjam comportamentos prejudiciais à saúde onde os alunos passam a maior parte do dia em busca de aprendizado e conexão social.

Páscoa
O início da Páscoa, na noite de 22 de abril, é uma oportunidade de reconhecer e honrar as tradições observadas pelos membros de nossa comunidade. Com duração de oito dias, até 30 de abril, a Páscoa tem um significado imenso na cultura judaica, comemorando a libertação dos israelitas da escravidão no antigo Egito. Durante esse período, as famílias geralmente se envolvem em rituais como a refeição Seder, um banquete simbólico que reconta a história do Êxodo e enfatiza temas de liberdade e redenção. Além disso, a remoção de produtos fermentados das casas e o consumo de pão sem fermento, conhecido como matzá, simbolizam a pressa com que os israelitas fugiram do Egito.
Reconhecer o significado dessa época, acomodar restrições alimentares e considerar os horários pode contribuir muito para tornar esse período mais confortável para os membros observantes e promover um senso de inclusão em nossa comunidade. Ao abraçar e respeitar as diversas tradições celebradas em nossa escola, fortalecemos nossos laços e promovemos um ambiente de respeito e apreciação mútuos.
Visibilidade do PowerSchool
As notas do terceiro bimestre serão divulgadas ao meio-dia de quarta-feira, 24 de abril, e os alunos e pais/responsáveis poderão acessar as notas no PowerSchool.

Clube de Xadrez da MVRHS enfrenta a Falmouth Academy
Na quarta-feira, 11 de abril, seis membros do Clube de Xadrez da MVRHS (Kestutis Biskis, Shevaun Brown, Owen Kiernan, Odin Robinson, Billie Vanderhoop Shephard e Gabriel Walters) embarcaram no Steamship Ferry para enfrentar seis alunos da Falmouth Academy. O segundo evento anual de xadrez entre nossas duas escolas começou no Leeside Restaurant, em Woods Hole. Depois de jogar uma partida no restaurante, todos embarcaram na balsa de volta para Martha’s Vineyard e continuaram jogando partidas contra vários adversários enquanto estavam na balsa. Não houve pontuação oficial. Todos os alunos tiveram sucesso e derrota. Mais fotos do evento aqui.
