Update on Today’s Events

Dear MVRHS Parents/Guardians,

Thanks to students, families and staff for their patience and cooperation as events unfolded today. The students and staff were incredibly understanding and composed throughout the day. 

In consideration of the incident that took place, we wanted to be sure to share some guidance for families that you may find helpful. Here are some key points/conversation starters to have with your student:

• Reassure your student(s) that they are safe.
  
   
• Validate their feelings by explaining that all feelings are okay. Allow ample time to talk about their feelings about today’s event, help put them into perspective, and assist them in expressing these feelings appropriately. 
  
   
• Be patient! Adolescents are not always open about their feelings. Using open ended questions are helpful to solicit information.
  
   
• Senseless violence is hard for everyone to understand. Doing things we enjoy, sticking to our normal routines, and being with friends and family help us feel better and keep our worrying thoughts to a minimum.

As always, our counselors are available to meet with any student who would like to further process the event from today. Students are welcome to make an appointment on their own. Parents/guardians can please email Amy Lilavois if you would like a counselor to check in with your student.

Please note: unless notified otherwise, school is open tomorrow, Friday, November 18th with an EFGH schedule.
