Addison Geiger: Mechanical Engineering Project
Addison is designing an electric guitar based on a 1970’s guitar originally patented by Allan Gittler using a skeletonized fretboard-less neck. The guitar is unique as it’s made almost entirely out of metal. The project will be a way for him to hone and merge his skills in the fields of automotive, mechanical engineering, and music.
How did you choose your project? I chose my project based on what I do in my free time and looking into how I can make something that will make me happy every time I look at it—something I put myself into and that matters to me.
Who was your advisor? I didn’t really have an advisor, but I would have to say Whitney Hanschka was a huge part in it.
How much time did your project require? My project required months of time and research, but it could have been done in a faster matter if I had had less limitations (i.e. Scheduling, time in the shop, materials, etc).
What are your plans for after graduation? Did your senior project influence that decision? I’m moving to Australia to study mechanical engineering at the University of New South Whales. I already knew what I wanted to study, this project just further confirmed that.
What did you like about doing your senior project? Gave me a sense of personal pride and a goal to strive for. Also, it keeps the brain functioning haha.
What challenge(s) did you face? I faced many, some being finding materials, a mentor, and a shop with a mill.
