Practicing Good Sportsmanship
Dear MVRHS Community,
We have made a commitment as a school to promote good sportsmanship by student-athletes, coaches and spectators at all MVRHS athletic events. The behavior of our fans is a cornerstone of good sportsmanship. The following are our rules and expectations for all MVRHS athletic events.
- All spectators should enter the game through the designated entrance. Once spectators have entered, we ask that they do not go back and forth from the parking lot.
- No bags/backpacks are allowed into games. Only clear bags will be permitted.
- All students in the stands must be in the bleachers. No students are allowed on the railing. This includes football, soccer, hockey, basketball and baseball games. This is a safety hazard.
- One person at a time in the porta potty/restroom.
- Fans should stay in the vicinity of the field. The Sharks/baseball field, the softball fields, the bus lot, the tennis courts and the track are not open during evening events at the game field. Please do not venture over there and out of the supervision of school staff.
- Be respectful to everyone in attendance. Remember that you are there to support student-athletes and enjoy the competition, not to intimidate or ridicule the other team, fans, or officials.
- Avoid criticism of game officials and sideline coaching which detracts from the performance of the student-athletes; understand that the officials are doing their best.
- The use of foul language is not acceptable. Those using foul language or inappropriate gestures of any kind will be asked to leave the game immediately.
- Calling out players’ names or numbers, or directing any derogatory comments towards opposing team members is not allowed, in any language.
- The only allowable signs are signs supporting Vineyard athletes or teams. Signs directed towards opponents will be confiscated.
- Cheering/chants for Vineyard teams and players is encouraged and can help motivate teams to succeed. Recognizing and showing appreciation for outstanding play by either team is encouraged.
Thank you for your cooperation in the promotion of good sportsmanship!
