This week we interviewed Josephine Orr and Dougie Norton, both members of the GSA club here at MVRHS
Dougie: I am in 11th grade. Josephine: I am in 11th grade.
What is your favorite class?
Dougie: My favorite class is music theory.
Josephine: My favorite class is music theater.
What does GSA stand for?
Josephine: GSA stands for Gay Straight Alliance.
When and why did you join GSA?
Dougie: I joined late freshman year because a friend told me it was a good group of kids.
Josephine: I joined at the end of last year because a lot of good people are members of the club and the club stands for a lot of the same ideas that I stand for.
Who created the club at MVRHS and how long has it been a part of our school?
Dougie: This club was created by Eva Wilson and it has been here for about 5 years.
Josephine: Eva Wilson was a student who had a big role in getting this club started.
We heard there was a fundraiser last week for GSA- how did it go?
Dougie: The fundraiser this past weekend and it went very well; it was well attended and very successful.
Josephine: The fundraiser went really well. All the money that was raised from entry fee and t-shirt money is going toward our trip to PRIDE in Boston.
Will the funds raised help GSA with any other events?
Dougie: The club is planning on doing more movie nights with the funds raised.
Josephine: The club does a movie night every month at Alex’s place.
What are some goals the students involved have for the club for the end of this year, looking forward to next year?
Dougie: With the money that is being fundraised, the club is hoping to go to PRIDE. PRIDE is a LGBT youth event that celebrates sexuality.
Josephine: The club wants to continue to increase the club size, get name out there, and go to more events like Youth PRIDE.
What is SPECTRUM and how does it relate to GSA?
Dougie: It is an LGBT film festival that shows movies people wouldn’t normally seek out. SPECTRUM is also in partnership with GSA.
Josephine: It is a film festival, part of the MV Film Center, that shows movies that relate to the LGBTQ community.
If you were able to pitch why students should get involved with GSA, what would you say?
Dougie: Join because it is a great club and looks great on a college application.
Josephine: It is really cool community and supports a lot of good people who are often in need of support.

Congratulations to all of our 3rd Quarter High Honor Roll and Honor Roll Students!
On Tuesday, May 8th, our own IT (Internet Technician) Clifford Dorr, will talk about his experiences with computers. (In the Library Conference room).
On Wednesday, May 9th, Noah Stobie will speak about his work as a police officer and his experiences as a substitute teacher at MVRHS for the past four years. Noah was born on MV, attended Tisbury School, and graduated from MVRHS with the class of 2012. Noah says, “After graduating from MVRHS, I had no idea as to what I wanted to do with myself and did not want to go on to college. Now I find myself getting into an amazing career and a job (policeman) that I love with the added plus of no college debt!!” (Room 321 – Mr. Hall’s room)
On Friday, May 11th, Ben Davey will speak about his work as a paramedic on the island and in Fall River, MA. Ben grew up on the island and graduated from MVRHS in 2016. Initially considering a career in commercial aviation, he instead became an EMT in high school and pursued an alternative route of career training, and enjoys his work in the communities he serves. (Room 321- Mr. Hall’s room)
Peer Tutoring in Room 203 with Mr. Lavers TUESDAY through FRIDAY
Peer Tutoring with Mr. Lavers will be in Room 203 during FLEX time. Mr. Bonneau will be in Room 113. **Sign up as usual for Mr. Lavers, but note the change in room**
Going Fishing: Getting started with Todd Goddell
Thursday, May 10th. There’s a fisherman Todd Goddell will speak to students during Flex period – give them some info on how to get started fishing on the island, demonstrate some of his gear and techniques and then do a Q and A with the students. ** Sign up for Island Grown/Garden, In the Garden if nice/CAFE if rain**

In looking at the concept of travel, two questions always arise: Are we going to a location? or Are we simply trying to leave one?
