Vineyarders of the Week

This week we interviewed Amy Lilavois and Matt Malowski, sophomore class advisors and MVRHS adjustment counselors.

What are your positions here at the school?

Matt :I am a school adjustment counselor.

Amy: I am the wellness coordinator and school adjustment counselor

How long have you been working at the school?

Matt: I have been at the school for 18 years, but have done lots of different types of jobs: ELL, English teacher, Assistant Principal, Alt Education, and now counselor. Amy: 13 years at MVRHS!

What made you come to the island?

Matt: I’m from central NY. I got a job teaching summer school at the WT school and then it lead to a full-time job the following fall. I used to come here in the summer, bartending and waiting tables during college.

Amy: Tired of living in NYC, I came one summer to live with a friend from college (and to have fun). I got a job at Women’s Support Services (what is now CONNECT) that Labor Day and have been here ever since.

Where did you go to school and what for?

Matt: SUNY Oneonta for Secondary Education and English.

Amy: University of RI where I received a BA in History/Philosophy. For grad school I went to Goddard College and received aMA in Counseling/Psychology.

What made you decide to be the sophomore class advisors?

Matt: Amy asked me to do it. I’ve been a class advisor before and it’s fun! It’s fun to work with the kids in a non-academic way. I like to organize events and help teach leadership skills and how to be a positive leader.

Amy: This is my 3rd round as a class advisor. It’s a great way to get to know a large number of students that I otherwise might not cross paths with. I enjoy working with the kids to plan fun activities that build our school community.

How did the dodgeball fundraiser go last Saturday?

Matt: Well, we raised about $1,700 and nobody got seriously hurt!

Amy: For the first go around, it was a hit! We raised a lot of money and everyone seemed to have a really good time. Next year will be bigger and better!

Why did you decide to become a SWEAR leader?

Matt: We need to have some serious conversations with our boys. I thought it was important because I am one of very few men in the counseling world. Boys don’t talk about stuff like this… feelings and “being a man,” I like having those types of conversations.

Amy: In 2016, I was Kaela Vecchia Zeitz in-school mentor for this senior project. SWEAR has grown in the 3 years it has been at MVRHS – including the important discussion about masculinity in our society which is imperative to help minimize the epidemic of sexual assault and rape. I love running programs like this because it gives students the opportunity to have discussions that don’t happen in the classroom and to learn from each other.

What are you hoping that the kids will take away from SWEAR?

Matt: I hope they really gain some perspective of what it’s like to be a woman and how much of an impact they can have as guys. How many things they could prevent with a little awareness.

Amy: For the boys, I hope that they gain a perspective of their power in our society and how they can use it to create positive change in their lives and in the lives of others. For the young women, I hope they can hear the male perspective and learn from it. And for everyone I hope they will want to continue this important dialogue with the rest of the students at MVRHS and in their lives in general.
