Vineyarder of the Week

Saige and Ian

Each week we will introduce a student or staff member to our entire school community!

This week we interviewed Saige Araujo and Ian Trance, who were captains of the Girls and Boys Ice Hockey teams this year.

What grade are you in?

Saige Araujo : I am in 12th grade.

Ian Trance: I am in 11th grade.

How long have you been playing hockey?

Saige Araujo: I started playing in first grade, but stopped playing in fifth grade. I then started playing again my freshman year, and have been playing since.

Ian Trance : I have been playing hockey since I was 4 years old and I have loved it ever since.

What position do you play?

Saige Araujo: I play right wing.

Ian Trance: I play defense but I switch right and left depending on my defensive partner.

What were some of the highlights of the season?

Saige Araujo: I love being able to play hockey with my friends and have the privilege of being coached by amazing and constructive coaches. I’ve also been able to meet new friends through the game.

Ian Trance: The highlight of this season was when the team went to UNH to play a hockey game, and we went to an indoor rock climbing facility which was a great team bonding activity.

What is the most difficult part of being a captain?

Saige Araujo: It is challenging to lead everybody on the team. It’s challenging and I find I often cannot do it as well as I want. Our team communicates a lot though. Every day is a new day.

Ian Trance: Being a junior captain is hard because the seniors respect me, but sometimes it’s difficult to get your point across so that everyone understands you and where you are coming from.

What else are you involved in at MVRHS?

Saige Araujo: I am involved with the Tribal Youth Group for Native American students. We meet during flex to discuss the trip that we’re planning and raising money for our group. Our plan is to go to San Diego for a leadership event called Unity.

Ian Trance: Since freshman year I have been a member of Peer Outreach and Student Council, where I hold the representative position for my class, and I am a new member of SWEAR (Stand With Everyone Against Rape).

Are you involved in other areas where you are a student leader?

Saige Araujo: Race Culture Retreat and the Tribal Youth Group.

Ian Trance: Peer Outreach, Student Council, SWEAR, and STING (for incoming 9th graders).
