Vineyarder(s) of the Week

Lollie and Erin

Each week we will introduce a student or staff member to our entire school community!

This Week: Lollie Bezahler and Erin DeBettencourt, 11th Graders

Where did they go and why?

This past summer Lollie and Erin went to Haiti for a week.

What made them decide to go?

Erin and Lollie both wanted to do a service trip that focused on helping children, but wanted to have a different experience in a unique setting.

Were they nervous at all?

“We went in with no expectations. Getting off the plane was a little nerve-racking because it was nothing like the United States. We were told by the organization we went with not to trust anyone with their bag, or look at anyone when we got off the plane.”

Why did they choose to go to Haiti?

Erin: My Mom already knew about the program so we knew it was a trusted program to travel with.

Lollie: We thought that Haiti would be a unique and different experience; something totally different than we were used to.

How did you help the community?

In the morning, we would help the orphanage build a church. The road to the village was just a small dirt road and part of it was too small for cars to get through, so we would spend our afternoons expanding the road. Any free time we had was spent with the local kids just hanging out.

Highlights of the trip:

Lollie: Getting to know the kids. They were all so friendly. Even with the language barrier, it was easy to get to know them and we had so much fun together.

Erin: Every day we worked by the river in the village. All the people would come together to help us work which made the experience very fun and memorable.

Did their experience in Haiti make them want to do another service-related trip?

Erin: Yes, Lollie and I are going back next summer. We’re interested in helping locally too by going to Boston for City-Reach (clothing and food drive). Next Wednesday, November 15th from 5-9pm at the Loft we are holding a dine to donate to raise money for Haiti (25% of all pizza sales).

Were they sad to leave?

“Yes, we built a really good relationship with the locals. But when we were leaving we were told we weren’t allowed to cry in front of the kids.”
