Mentorship Profile: Sara Poggi

Mentor/ Employer’s Name: Angela Rhoderick and Suzanne Hammond.

Mentorship Location: Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Number of Periods: 2 periods.

Brief Description of job: I shadow various doctors, nurses and physician assistants in different departments. I had spent the most time in the Emergency Department and in the Maternity unit. I perform little tasks around the departments like bringing samples and cultures to the lab, attaching monitors to the patient, and most importantly just observing the medical staff work.

Like/dislike about internship/mentorship: My biggest challenge about this mentorship was feeling that I couldn’t do more to help. Since I am a highschool student, there are many restrictions on what I can actually do with the patient and at times I feel slightly unhelpful to the staff at the hospital. However, the staff is so friendly and eager to teach that I am getting such a good experience out of this mentorship and am so glad I was able to do this.

Influence of job experience on post graduation life: This mentorship has definitely influenced my decision of what I wanted to do after graduation. I always knew I wanted to do something in the medical field so working at the hospital I was able to figure out what position I wanted to pursue. I have decided to go into a four year nursing program however by talking with various employees I realized that I can do so much more after that. I am planning to go back to school after working as a nurse for a few years to get a more advanced degree and become either a nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant or potentially a doctor.
